Suneel Darshan wanted the movie title as Rishtaa, because it was registered with director Indra Kumar, Suneel Darshan decided to alter the movie's title. Director Suneel Darshan was toying on the idea of making a thriller movie, and decided to leave that project and make a family drama around the ups and downs and family relationships he personally had experienced. The first cast member the director approached was 'Akshay Kumar'. After the narration of the script, Kumar was in tears as he felt the script was a mirror reflection of his own personal life. The director wanted a strong actor to play the role of the family head figure and wanted to sign Amitabh Bachchan.
He asked a journalist mutual friend of Amitabh who arranged a meeting between the director and the actor. After a detailed negotiation, Amitabh signed on. The director only publicly announced the film once he signed both leading actors Amitabh Bachchan and 'Akshay Kumar'. Juhi Chawla was pregnant whilst shooting, as her pregnancy was becoming more and more visible her scenes were altered for the climax scene by not showing her in the final family reunion scene.
